Local Non-Profit Haiti Lumière de Demain to travel to Haiti this week to improve education, health and environmental awareness

This coming week Fairfield based non-profit Haiti Lumière de Demain (Haiti’s Light for Tomorrow) will travel to Haiti and continue its commitment to promoting primary and secondary education, and environmental awareness. HLD is in the process of building the first lending library on the island of La Gonave, Haiti. Louis Elneus, who was born in Haiti and is a graduate of Sacred Heart University, started HLD in 1998 will be leading a trio of volunteers to share the HLD experience

Weston High School graduate (2000) Andrew Craycraft, Stamford High School Graduate (2000) Kate Dischino, and NBC 30 representative, Gloria Schpero will be among the group traveling to La Gonave, Haiti on Sunday April 23 through Sunday April 30. Craycraft, currently attends Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan, and has been working with Elneus for the past three years to create the environmental education program, which targets the island of La Gonave’s youth and overall environmental awareness. Dischino, a resident of Stamford and recent graduate from the University of Denver with a M.A. in International Administration, will return to La Gonave for a second time with HLD. Schpero, sales and marketing for NBC 30, shares Elneus’ passion to help educate Haitian children and looks to increase public awareness and gain financial support for the organization. Upon the groups return, Schpero looks to produce a Public Service Announcement to further educate the greater Connecticut area about the importance of HLD’s work.

The group will carry supplies and soccer equipment donated by Todd Plourde, assistant soccer coach at Manhattan College. Additional donations have been made by the Soccer Post of Fairfield, the youth confirmation class at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Fairfield, and by Greens Farms Academy students, lead by senior Libby Welke.
