“HLD is using its experience and knowledge of terrain and the communities to respond carefully and thoughtfully to this catastrophe,” Louis Elneus
The devastation in Haiti is beyond imagination, and from all reports, the suffering is enormous. As you can imagine, the next few weeks and months will be most challenging for Haiti and the island of La Gonave. Without overstepping the boundary of our mission, HLD is using its experience and knowledge of the terrain and the communities to respond carefully and thoughtfully to this catastrophe.
We have spoken to our director on La Gonave, Walner Michaud, and based on his accounts, we have adjusted our initiatives and are now seeking to raise money to:
1) Work to develop programs and initiatives to ensure that the youths receive the support they need psychologically, socially and educationally to bring a sense of normalcy back into their lives.
2) Help meet the acute medical needs that have arisen, which threaten the safety of the people on the island due to the large number of people seeking care. There is one hospital on La Gonave, and it is currently operating far beyond capacity to address the overwhelming need for medical care following the earthquake.
3) Deliver 10,000 solar powered flashlights within the next few weeks. Each flashlight costs approximately $35 and does not require new batteries or electricity – instead, they rely on solar power, and each recipient will be able to use theirs for as long as they need. With no electricity and a severe shortage of gas throughout Haiti, these flashlights will provide invaluable service for those affected beyond this period of emergency.
HLD is using its experience and knowledge of terrain and the communities to respond carefully and thoughtfully to this catastrophe.
As we are not a relief organization, any additional funds raised beyond this need will be used toward the long-term rehabilitation of the educational and environmental infrastructure on La Gonave. We hope you will accompany HLD as a partner on this endeavor.
