Priorities For 2021-22
Challenges & Grown Opportunities
As more and more of our students graduate and enter the workforce, HLD must also change.
Ideally, we would continue to offer our traditional programs, while adding the staff, expertise, and material resources needed to broaden our role to include empowerment and business development opportunities in our community.
01. Library in Anse-a-Galets
The library has become one of HLD’s core programs. The library is a unique resource on the island – as it is one of the only places students and other members of the community can go to study, read, and learn. Our collection covers everything from children’s books for beginning readers to college-level texts.
We are currently working to gain funding to both maintain our library’s staff and to provide a steady source of electricity so that we can also provide a computer lab.
With the needed staffed, coupled with the support and ideas of volunteers from the U.S., the library can grow as a platform for that provides additional educational opportunities and small business incubation.
02. Environmental Empowerment Programs
Our solar-powered flashlights and tree-planting initiative has a dual purpose.
First, it teaches students about the importance of the environment, particularly raising students’ consciousness around the damaging impact of deforestation in Haiti and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Second, by extension, it grows our students’ abilities to think critically about the world around them and take steps to improve it locally.
This has proven to be a powerful message, leading students to conceive and execute ambitious projects of their own.

03.Scholarship Program
We currently support students with scholarships that cover the costs associated with attending secondary school.
Most of these students would not be able to continue their education without this support – thus, it is critical to the long-term well-being of our students and our communities.
04. Textbook Purchase and Lending Program
This program has been the core of HLD since its founding. Each year, we make sure all public-school students in grade 1 to grade 6 receive the textbooks they need.
Over the last three years, we have worked with local teachers and administrators to mitigate this commitment somewhat: we have agreed to supply additional books every other year with the agreement that the schools will gather and redistribute those books themselves to meet the need in alternate years.
